Yes, I do…

Once on the Trans Siberian, while traveling to Beijing, I met an American photographer -Phillip van Nostrand- who told me he earned the money he needed for his adventure travels through wedding photography. Not so long ago he had been a teacher at a primary school in a small village somewhere in the middle of the US. At some point in time he decided to try his luck by moving to New York and setting up business there. Since then he has become a successful entrepreneur specialized in “luxury weddings and event photography” and was published in the New York Times.

During the long journey through Siberia we exchanged many ideas and  got excited every time we could get out of the train to take shots during the short stops at various stations. At times we would be pushing our stay to the limit such that Olga the ‘provodnika’ (the lady conductor) would be calling out from the top of the passenger wagon stairs to hurry us back on as the train was leaving.

“Don’t you get bored doing ‘just’ wedding photography? “ I asked.

“Many people have asked me that same question” he replied. “The answer is ‘No’, on the contrary. You see, during weddings people are always dressed up the best they can and are nearly always excited and in good spirits. Most people go out of their way to have fun and enjoy a great party. Usually the locations are scenic and colourful, if not glamorous and make great backgrounds for any photo shoot…”

 As I found out, it turns out he was right. Regardless if the wedding is in Tiruchirappalli (Trichi)-India, Erdi-Turkey, in the wedding palace of Bishkek-Krygyzstan, Ait Benhaddou – Morocco or Hengelo-The Netherlands!

Ja, ik wil…

Tijdens een reis met de Trans-Siberische naar Beijing ontmoette ik een Amerikaanse fotograaf, Phillip van Nostrand. Hij vertelde me dat hij het geld voor zijn avontuurlijke reizen verdiende met bruidsfotografie. Nog niet zo lang geleden was hij leraar op een basisschool in een klein dorpje ergens in het midden van de VS. Op een gegeven moment besloot hij zijn geluk te beproeven door naar New York te verhuizen en daar een bedrijf op te zetten. Sindsdien is hij een succesvolle ondernemer geworden, gespecialiseerd in "luxe bruilofts- en evenementenfotografie", en zijn werk is o.a. gepubliceerd in de New York Times.

Tijdens de lange reis door Siberië wisselden we veel ideeën uit en waren we enthousiast telkens als we even uit de trein konden stappen om foto's te maken tijdens de korte stops op de verschillende stations. Soms rekten we onze wachttijd zo lang mogelijk uit, dat Olga, de ‘provodnika’(conductrice}, vanaf de trap van de wagon riep dat we snel weer in de trein moesten stappen, omdat de trein al bijna vertrok.

"Raak je niet een beetje verveeld van 'alleen maar' bruidsfotografie?", vroeg ik.

“Veel mensen hebben me diezelfde vraag gesteld,” antwoordde hij. “Het antwoord is 'nee', integendeel. Kijk, tijdens bruiloften zijn mensen altijd op hun best gekleed en ze zijn bijna altijd opgetogen en in een goede stemming. De meeste mensen doen hun best om plezier te hebben en van een geweldig feest te genieten. Meestal zijn de locaties schilderachtig en kleurrijk, zo niet glamorous, en vormen ze een fantastische achtergrond voor elke fotoshoot...”

Hij had gelijk. Ongeacht of de bruiloft plaatsvindt in Tiruchirappalli (Trichi) in India, Erdi in Turkije, in het trouwpaleis van Bishkek in Kirgizië, Ait Benhaddou in Marokko of Hengelo in Nederland!
